Kids Zone: Resources for Parents, Caregivers, and Kids
Parenting is hard. Parenting kids with a history of trauma is harder. Parenting kids with a history of trauma through an unknown situation that is likely to produce worry, anxiety, regressive behaviours, etc. is even harder. We’ve compiled some resources to try and help families through this time, but please know we are also here to speak with you directly at any time – even if that just means listening.

Children removed from birth family need foster parents who can provide them with understanding care, safety and stability – for several days, weeks, months or much longer. Adults who step up to open their homes and hearts to vulnerable children are dedicated people willing to face the challenges that come with this important, rewarding experience. In addition to parenting traumatized children who may present with emotional and behavioral, foster parents must cope with challenges related to:

  • Ambiguity around concurrent planning
  • Loss and grief when children are reunited with birth family
  • Working with birth parents as part of reunification efforts
  • Working with child welfare system

Foster/adoptive parent and NACAC Program Manager, Kim Stevens will share how to address and cope with these and other challenges that are part of the foster parent experience.
